Welcome to Texas Asthma Camp
Join us June 21 – 26, 2015 as we celebrate 31 years of summer fun and better breathing! Since 1985, we have seen over 2,000 kids come to the Texas Asthma Camp, making us the oldest and one of the largest asthma camps in Texas. Our kids have lots of fun while learning how to take an active role in managing their asthma at home, at play, and during school.
Campers are accepted based on the date the application and application fee are received, the degree of your child’s illness, and number of years at Texas Asthma Camp. If we are full, your camper will be offered the opportunity to be placed on our waiting list.
The Measurable Value of Texas Asthma Camp
If your child has been diagnosed with asthma by a physician and is between the ages of 7 – 14, we encourage you to consider applying for the Texas Asthma Camp. The benefits of attending asthma camps are well documented. Research has shown that for the year following attendance at an asthma camp, asthmatic children show better management skills and have fewer missed school days, physician and ER visits, and hospital admissions because of their disease. What You Need to Do
Follow these steps to get your camper ready for Texas Asthma Camp. The links for each step are on the right side of the page. To access the application and forms, you must have Adobe Reader. Download Adobe Reader here.
- Step 1: Register – The first thing you must do is register your camper. After you register, you will receive a confirmation email. You only need to register once.
- Step 2: Apply – Once your camper is registered, you must apply. Click the orange application link on the right side of the page to download and complete the form. Mail the application along with the $25 application fee as instructed.
- Step 3: Medical & Release Forms – The medical and release form is required and due before camp begins. Download and complete the form, then mail it as instructed.
- Step 4: Financial Aid – We are very fortunate to have the support of the Texas Chest Foundation Fund to provide financial aid for campers who would not otherwise be able to attend Texas Asthma Camp. If you want to know if you are approved for financial aid, download and complete the financial aid application, then mail it as instructed.
Cost of Camp
The total cost of camp this year is $250. A $25 non-refundable application fee (made out to UT Health Northeast) is required for all applications. Applications are not considered complete until we receive the application fee. For those paying by cash, cashier’s check, or check, the balance of $225 is due no later than Monday, June 15 unless other arrangements are made by calling (903) 877-7075. About Asthma Camp
Managed by the asthma experts at UT Health Northeast, the Texas Asthma Camp is the oldest and most established asthma camp in Texas. Children ages 7-14 spend a week at beautiful Camp Tyler on Lake Tyler learning how to take control of their asthma while having fun at the same time. The majority of our camp counselors are respiratory therapy students from Tyler Junior College, and the key administrative and medical staff members have been a team for over 20 years in running the camp each summer.
In addition, a 24/7 clinic staffed by physicians and nurses who are lung disease experts give parents comfort in sending their kids to camp. Many times, children with asthma are not able to attend traditional camps because of their disease and the large number of medications they must take. The Texas Asthma Camp has created a safe environment for these children to participate in many fun activities while making life-long friends with other asthmatic children. They learn they are not alone.

Many times, allergies and asthma go hand in hand. It’s not uncommon for our kids to be allergic to a few foods or for some, a large number of foods. How You Can Help
Attending the Texas Asthma Camp has been a life-changing experience many times over throughout its 29-year history. Our children who thrive in the camp environment and learn the lessons we teach go on to become physically and academically stronger, healthier kids. No other program in our region of Texas offers this combination of education, expertise, peer support, and physical activity. The Texas Asthma Camp impacts the children who attend medically, socially, and academically.
In addition, asthma disproportionally affects children in poverty, and so we actively recruit kids most in need through contact with school nurses, emergency rooms, and physicians’ offices throughout the region.
You may have asthma or know someone who does and understand how important education is in managing this disease. Your financial support will mean that families without the financial resources to send their children will be able to. For many of these kids, the Texas Asthma Camp will provide a chance to forever change the course of their lives.
