The Department of Medical Education plays a vital role in the Health Center’s mission to “serve East Texas and beyond through excellent patient care and community health, comprehensive education, and innovative research” and is responsible for all continuing medical education (CME) activities. The mission of the Health Center’s CME program is to provide high quality educational activities designed to enhance physicians’ commitment to lifelong learning. The ultimate goal is to promote and further the practice of evidence-based and cost-effective healthcare in keeping with the Health Center’s mission to provide excellent patient care. The Department of Medical Education and its CME office sponsors and coordinates a wide range of innovative continuing educational activities including numerous ongoing series (Grand Rounds, Tumor Board, Pediatric Grand Rounds, etc.), plus additional symposia and other live outreach educational activities throughout the year.
In addition, The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler is the only area hospital accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education to sponsor pharmacy continuing education. The Department of Medical Education provides administrative oversight of this accreditation working with the pharmacy department to offer innovative and applicable educational opportunities for pharmacists.
The Department of Medical Education also oversees and manages all life support training in CPR, ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
